COLLECTORS OF MOSSES OF THE INTERIOR HIGHLANDS OF NORTH AMERICA
From as early as 1890’s (;C. H. Demetrio 1890; Benjamin Bush, 1893; William Trelease, 1893; J, H, Kellogg, 1894; Russell Colton, 1896; J. B. S. Norton, 1897) to the present there have many botanists and students that have made as few as 1 or 2 collections to several hundred to over 5000 collections (Bruce H. Allen, Lewis E. Anderson, Allan E. Brant, William F. Buck, Benjamin S. Bush, Carl E.Darigo, Rev. John Davis, Darigo, L. J. Gier, Nels. J. Holmberg, R. R. Ireland, Piers Majestyk, Greg Pedano, P. L. Redfearn, Jr. and Julia A. Steyermark). Many collectors were associated with Washington University and the Missouri Botanical Garden such Steyermark and Mildred Mathias as students in the late 1920’s and Bruce H. Allen, Allan E. Brant, Marshall A. Crosby, Carl E. Darigo , Nels J. Holmberg, Greg Pedano, and Si He. One collector, L. J. Gier (1955), is of particular importance since in addition to his many collections (DUKE, MO, NY), he was the first to organize and analyze the mosses in Missouri.
The collectors reported in Table 1 come from several sources: collections examined in the early 1960’s from the Field Museum (F), the Missouri Botanical Garden (MO), the Smithsonian (US), the University of Missouri (UMO), and the University of Arkansas (UARK) and current searches of data bases of Missouri Botanical Garden (http://mobot.mobot.org/W3T /Search/vast.html), Duke University (http://plantdb.biology.duke.edu:8080/BryoFullSearch /advanced.jsp) Southern Illinois University (SIU), and the New York Botanical Garden (http://sciweb.nybg.org/science2/hcol /allbryo /index.asp). In the case of MO, not all collections of mosses are currently cataloged and many collections from the Interior Highlands have yet to be entered. Dr. Steve Timme has provided a list of his collections deposited at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS (PSU).
The collections of Howard Crum (MICH), Diane Horton (IA) and Jewell Moore (TENN) are estimated or unknown as the herbaria that have many of there collections do not have an on line searchable data base. And finally, it should be kept in mind that the number of collections may include those from several herbaria and there has been no attempt to cross reference duplicate collections.
